ripping up the floor
I finally found it. The dream floor, that is. In a bathroom. Bathrooms and wood floors sadly were not made for each other, and because we want to build something that will last, rather than just add layer upon layer, we decided to rip it up.
Before you get too upset, let me reassure you, it will not go to waste. You never know what we might find in the rest of the house. Because the flooring was original, it did not get installed like a wood floor today, meaning there was no subfloor. So after tearing it up, we were left balancing on joists. And, because things built in the old days were much higher quality than things you get today, the planks were still over an inch thick!
This left us with quite the height difference to make up for from any new floor we might lay to the surrounding floor heights. We knew we planned to tile the floor, so we would need to put down plywood as a subfloor, then hardy backer, and mortar and tile. Luckily, when you add all that up, the height matches up quickly. Still, we opted for a very thick plywood layer.
After a run to Home Depot that is…
Now that the subfloor is in, I’m ready to start shopping for tile! But first, we better put the new wall in!
