learning
Hay is the lifeblood of our farm, so far. Our pastures are plentiful and our animals are hungry and messy. I know some would disagree with using hay as bedding for animals, but we are firm believers in using what’s available. Hay is what God has made available to us, so it is both food and bedding here on our farm.
I also know many across the country have struggled to make their hay this past year and we feel so incredibly blessed even for the opportunity to have this grass that grew and was able to be harvested. Once again, God’s providence has shone down on us.
That doesn’t mean it was easy. There were certainly times—like after breaking 3 pitman arms in one day—that we wondered if we were doing the right thing or if we had made a huge mistake. But making hay, like anything else, has been a learning process.
After researching all that we’d need and tracking down all the right equipment (at a price point we could afford), all that was left was to get it here. By way of good-natured nearby farmers and hitching light equipment up to our minivan (which looked quite comical), we did it! Now to study meteorology, because you can only make hay when the sun shines!
