birds, birds, more birds

“Don’t you guys have enough chickens?” Why yes, yes we do. So instead of more chickens, we got…

Turkeys! These crazy birds have been the best homestead surprise so far. We ordered 10 of them online from Tractor Supply Company. Sadly, 4 were DOA, but they worked with us and we were reimbursed for those that were lost. The remaining 6 thrived! Did you know turkeys LOVE to eat grass?!?! God is simply amazing. He provided and still provides all that His creatures need. We had zero experience with turkeys (sounds like everything else we’ve done), but let me tell you, they are definitely worth the adventure. From the sweetest noises, to their voraciousness for the day’s new grass and realizing when people are coming to see them, there is nothing to dislike about them. We were not able to get our heritage turkey order in on time with the timing of the move, so these birds were the next best thing. They need 16-20 weeks to grow, and they have no problem making that happen. They made it to the freezer in time for Thanksgiving, which was definitely bittersweet. But we look forward to adding a more sustainable breed to our farm in the spring and living this adventure all over again.
