settling in
Well, now that you have met all the animals we brought home for our first season of farming, it’s time to settle in and see how we fare from here! Things could get interesting with all we have to learn. To sum up for the year 2022, we have 2 Nubian bucks and 2 Nubian does with a size difference too great to be productive this fall during their “rut” season. In the future, though, they will help provide fresh milk for us. We raised 6 broad-breasted turkeys and got them processed just in time for Thanksgiving. We have a plethora of egg laying hens that are laying in a variety of colors, along with a few surprise roosters. And to round out the farm population is this year’s main meat source, cornish-cross meat chickens, which we did in 3 small batches to fill up the freezer and hold us over till our first full year of farming comes.
Till then, the goats and chickens are soaking up all that they can of the dwindling rays of sunshine and preparing for winter. Egg production is slowly dwindling, goats are growing their coats, and they’re all spending more time in the barn. Looks like it’s time for us to head inside, too. On to the house projects! (You can check those out in the Home Renovations blog.)
