replacing the floor
I really struggled with taking the wood floor out of the bathroom. I knew Superman was right, but I did not want to see it go. What’s done is done, though. Since we have decided to adopt a cabin theme, we want to choose elements that reflect that to put back into the room. Enter a trip to the tile store! If you’re a glutton for punishment like me, you’ll drag all your kids along. Just kidding, they were actually pretty into it and gave good input.
I was drawn to dark tile for the room even before the trip to the store, maybe to go with the sink I bought before moving, or maybe because I thought it would compliment the wood well. In any case, there weren’t many kinds of tile I was willing to entertain. When you think cabin, your choices are pretty much narrowed down to natural stone. So a dark, natural stone with some water resistant qualities. There’s one solution: slate.
No natural stone is waterproof, but slate was used for roofing, so it can’t be the worst choice [I hope]. We have even found fragments of our old slate roof inside some walls here and there. Anyway, because it isn’t completely waterproof, any stone needs to be sealed before use and periodically after installation. Thankfully, it isn’t so demanding that it would deter us.
These are bigger than we were thinking originally, but we are so incredibly happy we got them! They are beautiful and have a nice texture to them with slightly varied thicknesses (which is great because it can help hide the fact that we are amateur tilers!). And because they’re so big, it only took an evening to install them. Also, I feel like the dark really does play off the wood nicely. After we get the grout in, we can move on to the shower tile…almost!
