back from the break

It has been awhile, but if you know me, I cannot settle on one project at a time. I get so excited about what I want to accomplish that I cannot help but jump in, like a mom who pours a cup of coffee and then sees that something needs done, only to be led—one by one—to a hundred other things that need done. Not that that has ever happened to me. Suffice it to say I have been heavily distracted by the never ending number of projects here. However, we have finally gotten back on track with working on the master bathroom.

The last thing I showed you was the wall we put up between the bathroom and the office. I also shared that the adjacent wall had been compromised by some previous renovations. So, after shoring up the wall so that it could once again bear weight, we were able to drywall inside the bathroom as well.

A peek at the interior drwall meeting the wood wall.

The next step is to protect the wood from future moisture. We covered the drywall in plastic sheeting to protect from drips/overspray. Then, we sprayed the wood walls and ceiling with a waterproofing wood oil.

We love how the oil added a richness to the look of the wood.

I wanted to make sure that we put the oil on before filling the wood gaps, just in case any moisture might find its way back there. Once the oil dried, I made my own log cabin chinking, using one of the recipes found here. Log Cabin Hub has a wealth of information for anyone looking into building or repairing a log cabin, very well-thought-out and practical information. We aren’t too concerned with the chinking long-term because we are only using it inside. If I were doing a real log cabin exterior, I might go a different route. For now, though, this saved me hundreds of dollars and still looks great.

An up-close view of the chinking.

We used painter’s tape on either side of the gaps to protect the wood and then chinked by hand. It wasn’t the quickest or most efficient, but it worked!
